The many benefits of Pine Straw for your landscape:
Pine straw is the naturally-shed leaf (needle) of the pine tree. When a tree loses it’s leaves, they fall to the forest floor and decompose.
This benefits the environment by recycling nutrients and maintaining the forest soil’s organic matter in a naturally sustainable cycle.
By using pine straw in your landscape, you are improving your soil in much the same way as a natural forest system.
Hardwood bark mulch can cause calcium and potassium build-up in soil, increase pH, and cause soil mineral imbalance that can interfere with nutrient uptake. The minerals in pine needles are balanced, so using pine straw as a mulch will prevent imbalance in the soil.
Hardwood and other bark mulches can wash away in heavy rain. Pine straw needles knit together in the landscape and holds in place, helping to prevent soil erosion and nutrient lose.
